Following a knock-out Australian premiere season at the Arts Centre in 2006, New York City's most daring contemporary ballet company finally returns to Melbourne. The 2009 program will combine breathtaking classical dance skills with a barrier-breaking attitude and music from the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Odetta, and even George Frideric Handel.
Gone is an astonishingly physical trio for three men about brotherhood, conflict and survival featuring the stirring music of American folk singer Odetta, often described as the voice of the civil rights movement. Momentary Forevers features the unlikely musical collaboration of George Frideric Handel and John Cage. Moody Booty Blues is a short, hot work for five dancers featuring the electrifying American blues music of Muddy Waters, Son House, Roy Buchanan and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Brand new works include I Will Not Be Broken, Routines with the music of Collage and a major choreographic milestone, Rise, featuring the music of U2.
"Power, punch and pizazz. For sheer exuberance, the dancers of Complexions Contemporary Ballet must hold the gold medal. From first moves to final curtain they dance in an athletic, up-tempo program employing techniques from ballet to contemporary dance and jazz, performed with abundant hard-edged, out-there New York attitude. And in the end we are borne up by their sheer vitality; going out the door with that fabulous sense of energised exhaustion that is the hallmark of great entertainment." Hilary Crampton, The Age, 2006
