About

Sydney Writers’ Festival welcomes Dave Eggers, one of the world’s most innovative writers and publishers, in conversation with Cath Keenan the director of Sydney Story Factory.

Dave’s creative output is staggering and his work and projects have inspired thousands around the world. He is the author of ten books, including most recently Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever?, The Circle and A Hologram for the King, which was a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award. Eggers is the founder of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing company based in San Francisco that produces books, a quarterly journal of new writing (McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern), and a monthly magazine, The Believer. McSweeney’s also publishes Voice of Witness, a nonprofit book series that uses oral history to illuminate human rights crises around the world. Eggers is also the co-founder of ScholarMatch, a non-profit organisation designed to connect students with resources, schools and donors to make college possible and 826 National, a network of eight tutoring centres around the country. Centres inspired by the 826 model have opened across the globe, including 100 Story Building and Sydney Story Factory in Australia.

“A writer of the first rank . . . Powerful, mysterious, mischievous . . . Eggers’s strengths as a writer are real: his funny, pitch-perfect dialogue; the way his prose delicately captures the bumblebee blundering of [characters’] thoughts . . . and the stream-water clarity of his descriptions.” — Lev Grossman, Tim
