Short Biography
DIANA KRALL
with special guests Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot*
Roundhouse Entertainment and the Frontier Touring Company are delighted to announce Grammy award-winning pianist and singer Diana Krall will be returning to our shores in 2010 and, in a world first, will be joined by the sublime talents of Madeleine Peyroux and Melody Gardot.
Diana will perform at five ‘a day on the green' events nationally as part of her February/March concert tour, which will also see her play at indoor entertainment centres backed by 42-piece symphony orchestras.
Diana will tour Australia for the first time since 2005 in support of her twelfth album Quiet Nights (released in March through Universal). Since her last visit she has given birth to twin boys, released four albums, produced and performed on Barbra Streisand's new album, and toured extensively across the United States, Europe and UK.
Reviews for Diana's Quiet Nights tour have been uniformly glowing with The Los Angeles Independent writing "...nothing was musically impossible with Diana Krall's easy and sublime performance" and the Winnipeg Sun called it a "...flawlessly executed performance from all concerned".
Since her debut in 1993, Diana has topped both the pop and jazz charts and sold millions of records worldwide. She has proven her genuine talent and credibility as a mold-breaking jazz musician time and time again.
Returning to Australia and New Zealand for the first time since her sold out 2007 tour is the soulful and enigmatic Madeleine Peyroux. Her latest album offering Bare Bones (Universal) is the follow-up to previous albums Half The Perfect World and her million plus selling breakthrough album Careless Love. The Australian wrote of her last tour "...her singing was spectacular. Her tone was sweet and vulnerable and her phrasing was elastic..."
Rounding out this phenomenal touring lineup is Melody Gardot, who recently took Australia by storm during a short promotional visit in support of her new album My One and Only Thrill (Universal). The Sydney Morning Herald wrote of her showcase concert "Gardot feels and looks like a star" and when you learn that she came to her current career through music therapy while recovering from a near fatal accident, her talents are even more remarkable.
Across its nine year history, ‘a day on the green' has proudly presented a diverse range of music, and to see these incredible artists all on the same bill is an extraordinarily rare opportunity and one that will be embraced by music lovers nationally.
* Diana Krall will also be joined by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for the 'an evening on the green' event at Kings Park and joined by Katie Noonan for the 'a day on the green' events at Peter Lehmann Wines, Bimbadgen Estate, Centennial Vineyards and Rochford Wines.
In-depth Biography
Singer/pianist Diana Krall got her musical education when she was growing up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, from the classical piano lessons she began at age four and in her high school jazz band, but mostly from her father, a stride piano player with an extensive record collection. "I think Dad has every recording Fats Waller ever made," she said, "and I tried to learn them all." Krall attended the Berklee College of Music on a music scholarship in the early '80s, then moved to Los Angeles, where she lived for three years before moving to Toronto. By 1990, she was based in New York, performing with a trio and singing. After releasing her first album on Justin Time Records, Krall was signed to GRP for her second, Only Trust Your Heart and transferred to its Impulse! division for her third, a Nat "King" Cole Trio tribute album called All for You. Love Scenes followed in 1997, and in late 1998, she issued the seasonal Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. When I Look in Your Eyes followed in 1999. Whatever noteriety Krall had earned over the years for her work exploded with this album, which became an international best-seller and earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. It also was the first jazz album to be nominated for Album of the Year in twenty-five years. Krall's crossover success followed her as she performed in the Lilith Fair the following year and her songs cropped up everywhere from episodes of Sex in the City to films like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. In 2001 she released The Look of Love. The album topped the Billboard charts and went quintuple platinum in Canada, the first by a Canadian jazz artist to do so. The Look of Love also helped Krall win three Juno awards in 2002, taking home awards for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. Two years later, Krall issued The Girl in the Other Room. Covering a few standards, this album included original material for the first time in her career. Returning to the large ensemble standards approach of her previous album, Krall released From This Moment On in 2006. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
