What is the Qantas Melbourne Track Classic?
It’s a two-day athletics event at the brand new Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. The IAAF World Challenge is a global series, and this is the first event on the 2012 calendar. There will be a mix of International and Australian names competing against each other, with the Australian athletes in particular attempting to secure their spot in the team for the London Olympics.


Why should I go and watch?
Next year is all about the London Olympics and while not everyone will able to travel the 16000km to the UK to see the Australians in action they can be guaranteed to see them in Melbourne.
Running, jumping and throwing are the three actions at the heart of every sport and no-one does it better than the members of the Flame team. Experience Amazing.


Who can I expect to see?
Most of, if not ALL, the Australian athletes will compete across the two days as all events, but the hammer, are incorporated into the schedule. This will include World Athlete of the Year and world champion Sally Pearson, world silver and bronze medallist Mitchell Watt (long jump), former two-time world champion Jana Pittman, Commonwealth Champion and World indoor champion Fabrice Lapierre (long jump), world championship 5000m bronze medallist Craig Mottram, plus a host of International names. Previous competitors have included former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell, and current 800m world record holder and world champion David Rudisha.


When is it?
Fri March 2, and Sat March 3, 2012. Both days will start about 6:30pm and last for three hours.

The IAAF Melbourne Track Classic doubles as the nomination trial for the 2012 Olympic Games. For this reason, the event will be held across two days and incorporate all championship events on the London 2012 schedule.
