JAMES RHODES
THE MAN MAKING BEETHOVEN SEXY

"James Rhodes is not your typical classical pianist.
Yet his passionate playing and rock-star aura could be just what the music needs." - The Times

Kay and McLean Productions proudly announced today that the classical pianist with rock star attitude JAMES RHODES will tour Australia for the first time in October this year as part of the Melbourne Festival. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday July 13th.

In announcing the tour, Liza McLean said: "I saw James perform recently in London and his charm and talent just blew me away! James wipes away the pretension that often surrounds classical music and gives you, no matter who you are, or what your upbringing, unequivocal permission just to sit back and have the music itself engulf you. It's like being in a trance, as you sit and listen to James play, you feel with every note the connection and genuine respect he has for these great composers and the music they have left us."
Described as the "Nigel Kennedy" of the piano, JAMES RHODES isn't your average classical musician, the accolades about him speak for themselves "an innovative and imaginative musician of real talent" Gramophone Magazine and "Rhode's talent burns brightly" wrote The Daily Telegraph.

The concert tour will see JAMES RHODES open at the Melbourne Festival and then perform in, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide.

James dispenses with the formal strait-jacketed approach to conventional classical performance whilst keeping the music itself resolutely core classical. In addition to established classical concert halls like the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Royal Albert Hall he plays at rock festivals, theatres and jazz clubs, getting rid of programme notes and introducing the pieces himself from the stage. This new approach sees his typical audience consist of both established concert-goers and classical first-timers in equal measure.

James has recorded 3 albums; his first two albums are released and available in Australia by ABC Music. His debut album with Warner, Bullets and Lullabies, was released in the UK in December 2010 and went straight to No 1 on iTunes' classical download chart. Bullets and Lullabies will be release by Warner in Australia on Friday 15th July.

James performed at the Holders Festival, in Barbados, the E4 Udderbelly (Southbank). Cheltenham Music Festival and Latitude Festival where he was the first solo classical musician to play core classical piano repertoire.

In October 2010, James was featured in the BBC documentary Chopin: The Women Behind the Music and is currently presenting and performing in his very own television series James Rhodes: Piano Man both coming soon to SBS.

This year James has been invited back to the Cheltenham Music Festival and will also perform at the Lichfield Festival prior to departing on his UK tour and heading to Australia.
"The joy of James Rhodes is the way he reaches out to young, unconverted audiences by throwing them into classical music's deep end - Beethoven, Bach - with performances of such natural ease and brilliance that no one can resist." - Geoff Brown, The Times
Prior to the October concert tour, JAMES will be in Australia for one week only from 17th July and is available for interviews.
Rhodes biography makes difficult reading, he's been through hell and back due to a difficult childhood and personal trauma but music has remained the one constant source of support throughout. Aged seven, he fell in love with Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, and started playing piano.

Aged 18, he was offered a scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama but ended up studying psychology at University College London. Without music his life fell apart and it was during a brief but painful period in a psychiatric institution and a rehab centre in America that he realized the importance the piano played in his survival. He made it a point from that time on to commit to his passion and saw his music profile go from complete unknown to rising star, attracting celebrity followers such as Stephen Fry and Sir David Tang.
If he has his way, piano playing will never again be labeled as staid. "These famous composers were real players," Rhodes says. "Bach had 21 children. I want people to know he wasn't this dour guy."

On stage he interacts with his audience, sharing his thoughts on the music and composers. By using his trademark stand-up style, James a touch of rock n roll to each performance.
"His sound cannot be mistaken for that of any other pianist, alive or dead. It is confrontational, brittle, and intermittently seductive." Norman Lebrecht
