Allen Toussaint

"when I meet someone like Allen Toussaint - that for me is like meeting, you know, someone the equivalent of the Dalai Lama because for me, he influenced the way I played the piano, he's a historical part of rock and roll."Elton John (on Elvis Costello's Spectacle)

In his first ever Australian performances Sydney Opera House is honoured to present legendary pianist, vocalist, producer and songwriting genius, Allen Toussaint and friends.

An extraordinary performer with an astounding list of honours and accolades, including most recent 2011 induction into the Song-writer's Hall of Fame, Toussaint has crossed many paths in his illustrious 40-year music career. He has produced, written for, arranged, had his songs covered by and performed with many a music giant including Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, Aaron and Art Neville, Joe Cocker, The Rolling Stones, Irma Thomas, Etta James ... the list goes on.

" jazz for people who think they don't like jazz..." New York Times

Performing a career spanning set with his dynamite 4-piece band including Renard Poché (Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Peter Gabriel, The Indigo Girls, and The Neville Brothers), Roland Guerin (George Benson, Jimmy Scott, Frank Morgan, Vernel Fournier, and Gerry Mulligan) & more, experience why Toussaint is hailed around the world as one of the defining voices of rock, rhythm and blues.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band

‘A modern omnivorous brass-band that embraces be-bop, funk, and rhythm-and-blues...irresistible.' New York Times

If you missed The Dirty Dozen Brass Band during Sydney Festival recently, don't do it again! Featuring alongside Toussaint in this Big Easy extravaganza, is this cherished New Orleans vocal and brass ensemble synonymous with high-octane performances.

Originally formed in 1977, Dirty Dozen revolutionized the brass band sound by being one of the first to incorporate funk and bebop into the traditional New Orleans style.

From local parties to clubs to major festivals around the world, a performance from this genre-bending music machine featured on albums by artists including David Bowie, Norah Jones and The Black Crowes, will have you on your feet before the lights go down!

Jon Cleary

"Jon Cleary is the ninth wonder in the world." - Bonnie Raitt

Completing this triple treat is one of New Orleans' greatest talents "piano professor" Jon Cleary with his new trio (Piano, Bass & Drums). Born in England and bred in New Orleans, this bandleader's funk and R&B is steeped in New Orleans styles, dripping with parade beats, dancing piano and melodic hooks under the sharpest of lyrics.

Alongside a solo career with noted funk band The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, a long list of recording credits with artists such as Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, India Arie, and Ryan Adams, he's also the notorious hired gun for Bonnie Raitt and John Schofield. Cleary is clearly the perfect addition to this masterful New Orleans musical fraternity.
