THE MAN BEHIND THE HITS
Leon Russell's career runs the musical gamut from Sinatra to the Stones, the Beach Boys and BB King. He's written some of the most-covered songs in the pop songbook, and three Stones and two Beatles performed on his debut solo record, yet he isn't a household name.

Just some of the artists who have performed Russell's songs include: B.B. King ("Hummingbird"),  Joe Cocker ("Delta Lady"), Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock and Christina Aguilera ("A Song for You"), The Carpenters, Luther Vandross, Sonic Youth ("Superstar"), George Benson ("This Masquerade") - and many more.

There is little this music legend has not done. After Joe Cocker's 1969 version of "Delta Lady", he then went on to organise Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour - documented in the famous concert film with the same name.

His other well known songs include "Tight Rope" and "Lady Blue".  But Russell, described as the ultimate rock & roll session man, has collaborated with hundreds of artists including Joe Cocker, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, J.J. Cale, B.B. King, Gram Parsons, Ike & Tina Turner, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and The Rolling Stones, just to mention a few.

A part of Phil Spector's studio group that created the famous the 'Wall of Sound', Leon Russell played on many popular successes of the 1960s, including songs by The Byrds, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Bobby "Boris" Pickett, and Herb Alpert. He also arranged classics like Ike & Tina Turner's monumental "River Deep, Mountain High".

Russell's most recent effort is his acclaimed 2010 collaboration album with Elton John called The Union which charted in the Top Ten in US and Canada and went Silver in the UK.

A LIFETIME OF MUSIC
Born in 1942 in Oklahoma, Russell began studying classical piano at the age of three, and formed his first band a decade later, after picking up the trumpet.

Russell reportedly earned his first gig at Tulsa nightclub by lying about his age. He played behind Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before touring in support of Jerry Lee Lewis. At 17, he moved to Los Angeles, studying guitar under the legendary James Burton and appearing on sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell.

In 1967, Russell built his own recording studio and teamed with guitarist Marc Benno to record the acclaimed, psychedelic "Look Inside the Asylum Choir" album.  The album was the first of more than 40 the rocker has since put his name to.

Later - using the notoriety gained from his appearance in the Joe Cocker tour film - he issued a self-titled solo album which pitted his gravelly voice against a fusion of pop, rock, country, blues, and gospel.

His second solo album, "Carney" (1972) reached the number two spot on the Billboard charts and delivered his first pop hit with the single "Tight Rope." A succession of albums followed, including a three-LP live set and the country-inspired album "Hank Wilson's Back" which featured Hank Williams covers. Later he collaborated with his new wife, singer Mary McCreary on "The Wedding Album".  After completing the solo album "Americana", Russell teamed with Willie Nelson for 1979's "Willie & Leon".

He then spent the next two years touring with his bluegrass band, the New Grass Revival, and after a quiet period in the 1980s he put out "Anything Can Happen" in 1992. Ten years later, Russell issued an album of cover songs called "Moonlight & Love Songs", followed by Angel in Disguise five years later in 2007. A trio of releases, "Almost Piano", "Bad Country", and "In Your Dreams", appeared in 2008.

LITTLE FEAT IS NO SMALL BAND
Idiosyncratic songwriting, exceptional musicians and an eclectic blend of R&B, country, blues and rock and roll are the foundations behind Little Feat's 42 year career. The band was founded by Lowell George (vocals, guitar, slide guitar) and bassist Roy Estrada - who met while playing in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention band - in 1969 with drummer Richie Hayward and keyboardist Billy Payne.

Fitting into the cruisy rock sound coming out of California in the 1970s, the band earned a cult following among critic and musicians for their early releases "Little Feat" (1971) and "Sailin' Shoes" (1972). Frustrated by a lack of commercial success, Estrada left the band and was replaced by New Orleans musician Kenny Gradney. In its second incarnation, Little Feat also featured guitarist Paul Barrére and percussionist Sam Clayton, who gave the music a funkier feeling, as shown on 1973's "Dixie Chicken."

Barrére and Payne became the band's main songwriters and behind the jazzy fusions of 1975's "The Last Record", "Time Loves a Hero" (1977), the double-live album "Waiting for Columbus" (1978), and "Down on the Farm" (1979).

The group splintered after the untimely death of Lowell George in 1979, but  Payne, Barrére, Hayward, Gradney, and Clayton re-formed Little Feat in 1988, adding vocalist/guitarist Craig Fuller and guitarist Fred Tackett, picking up new fans especially among American blues-rock scene, despite their jazz-rock fusion sound.

Their highly anticipated comeback album, "Let It Roll" was released in 1988 and went gold. It was followed by "Representing the Mambo" (1989), "Shake Me Up" (1991), and "Ain't Had Enough Fun" (1995) on which female singer Shaun Murphy joined the line up. Since then, the band has released a further five albums, with the most recent issue being 2008's "Join the Band." Little Feat is still going strong and is touring regularly with its current line up.
