The Conch Theatre (Fiji / New Zealand)
Australian Exclusive
Director Nina Nawalowalo
An unlikely and touching love story between a Fijian high chief from the island of Kadavu and the daughter of Cambridge-educated schoolmasters is brought to the stage with a rich sense of heritage and pride.
The ancient art of Fijian Masi (tapa) cloth-making is interwoven with a romance sparked in the 1950s during a game of chess in Wellington, New Zealand.
Amazingly, key moments were captured by photographer Ans Westra, in a stunning set of black and white images that are the backdrop for this expressive collaboration.
The Conch Theatre’s drama of loss, memory and identity is a unique work crafted by director Nina Nawalowalo (Vula), British illusionist Paul Kieve (magic advisor on the Harry Potter films) and an ensemble of six extraordinary male Fijian dancers.
