About

Following the release of 1998's IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA and subsequent support tour, legendary US indie cult band NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL went on hiatus. Aside from a 2001 live album, a 2002 album of Bulgarian music and a handful of live appearances, Jeff Mangum became indie rock's resident recluse for over a decade. The band is noted for its experimental sound, obscure lyrics and eclectic instrumentation. For the first time ever, NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL will be performing shows in Australia.

Joining NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL will be the Portland, Oregon troubadour M. WARD. In April this year M. WARD released his highly anticipated sixth studio solo album A Wasteland Companion to receiving critical acclaim world-wide. In the three years since the release of his last solo album, (the universally lauded Hold Time), he’s toured the globe, released two albums as one half of Grammy-nominated duo She & Him, as well as an album with the talented group of friends collectively known as Monsters Of Folk. The album, consisting of 12 stunning tracks, was made with 18 musicians and recorded in eight different studios. Ward’s honey-soaked vocals, deft finger-picking, innate sense of melody and beguiling lyrics have already cemented his reputation as one of America’s true musical treasures and A Wasteland Companion features some of the finest song writing and most striking deliveries of his career.

SUPERCHUNK has offered up a sonic salve off and on for two decades, at various volumes. Like most great bands that started loud, they also explored the quiet with releases including a self-titled debut (which housed “Slack Motherfucker”), Come Pick Me Up, Here’s to Shutting Up and the bands most recent offering, I HATE MUSIC. The album reflects the joys of a life spent immersed in music but there’s a dark undercurrent as well. That title isn’t tongue-in-cheek, but it’s really more a question than a statement.

In what promises to be a stellar evening don’t miss NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, M.WARD and SUPERCHUNK performing live.
