Sydney Children's Festival will burst into the city and wider Sydney, filling five Sydney premier venues. The 2011 program is the festival's biggest program to date, covering every aspect of creativity and learning including live theatre, art, music, science, and circus play for kids aged 3 - 12 and their families.
Taking place across two fantastic weeks, the 2011 festival features six theatre productions, over 50 workshops, over 60 free events and is expected to reach over 50,000 children.
For the first time, the Sydney Children's Festival is expanding across five Sydney and wider Sydney venues including Riverside Theatres in Parramatta, L!vesites in Newcastle, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith, Sydney University, Seymour Centre and the festival's home, CarriageWorks. The amazing reach of this year's festival means that no Sydney child will be left out!
The Sydney Children's Festival introduces groundbreaking new performances for children. Highlights include a World Premiere from CarriageWorks' resident company, Erth. Titled I Bunyip, this exciting original show introduces kids to creatures from Aboriginal culture who have inhabited our landscape and imaginations for generations, even to the present day. We all know what a Bunyip is, but what should you do if you meet a Yuwk Yuwk?
Other highlights of the theatre program include Polyglot Theatre's City of Riddles, which creates a specially designed 360-degree interactive theatre experience especially for children, requiring hands-on participation from the delighted audience! Sydney Children's Festival performances are also taking place at the Seymour Centre, Riverside Theatres in Paramatta, and Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith.
Workshops at the festival include Visual Arts, Literature, Science, Music, Cooking, Gardening and the Sydney Children's Festival perennial favourite, Circus. Bringing the big-top action back, the talented people at Circus Monoxide will once again create a fabulously energetic program of circus themed movement and tricks workshops for kids. You can try out the free introductory activities or take part in one of the many intensive circus skills workshops.
Under 5's are specifically catered for at the festival, with the inspirational Under 5's Alive program with activities that have been specially designed to keep kids aged 0 - 5 amused and engaged in activities across the creative spectrum.
For story lovers, the festival offers an array of literature programs designed in partnership with the Children's Book Council of Australia (NSW) to foster a love of books and stories. For singing enthusiasts, the official Sydney Children's Festival Choir is back, uniting mini maestros from Wollongong, Parramatta and the Inner West to sing specifically composed songs by emerging local young singer/songwriters.
The sheer volume of activities and choices of entertainment at the festival mean that every day is a different adventure! With creative explorations to embark on, magical performances to see, and brand new learning experiences to share, Sydney Children's Festival is a giant, high energy artistic playground for families across Sydney to enjoy!
