THREE DOG NIGHT & THE TURTLES....Happy Together On Tour in November 2010
Legendary music icons Three Dog Night and The Turtles featuring Mark 'Flo' Volman and Howard 'Eddie' Kaylan are performing together for a national tour in November 2010, playing concerts in Newcastle, Sydney, Gold Coast, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne as part of their highly anticipated visit to Australia.
Three Dog Night are celebrating their 4th decade and bringing with them some of the most astonishing statistics in popular music. Their hits wind through the fabric of pop culture today - songs like "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)", "Joy To The World", "Black And White", "Shambala, "An Old-Fashioned Love Song" and "One"serve to heighten our emotions and crystallise Three Dog Night's continuing popularity. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records and sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night . Boasting chart and sales records that are virtually unmatched in popular music. They had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including 3 No.1 singles, 11 Top 10 singles, 18 straight Top 20 singles, 7 million-selling singles and 12 straight RIAA Certified Gold Albums. Their hits appeared on best-selling charts in all genres (pop, rock and country). Dunhill Records claimed 40 million record albums were sold by the band. They recorded the music of the best songwriters of their time: Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton among many others. Now as they mark 40 years on the road, Three Dog Night continue to grow their fan base and develop new ways of doing business.
Three Dog Night comprises of founding members Cory Wells and Danny Hutton on lead vocals, as well as original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and guitarist Michael Allsup. Paul Kingery (bass and vocals) and Pat Bautz (drums) complete the line-up. It should be noted that their now famous name came from a story about Australian aborigines who, on cold nights in the outback, sleep with their dogs for warmth. The coldest evenings are known as "three dog nights".
On the other hand, very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960's to the 1990's as have Mark 'Flo' Volman and Howard 'Eddie' Kaylan. Initially they made their mark with The Turtles, then they joined Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention, and then they glided into their own Flo & Eddie persona, dishing out records that have encompassed a multitude of personalities. The Turtles have sold over 60 million records worldwide and their hit songs ("Happy Together", She'd Rather Be With Me", "Let Me Be", "Elenore" and "You Showed Me") are only a few of the 10 top ten records they have had, and were to go on to phenomenal success with ten top-ten singles and over five years of chart recordings. They performed all over the world and their signature hit, "Happy Together" knocked the Beatles' "Penny Lane" out of the number one slot in America. The Turtles were fixtures on television. They also produced many albums for other bands and artists, as well as singing background on over 100 albums. They can be heard singing with John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, Blondie, Duran Duran, The Psychedelic Furs, T. Rex, Alice Cooper and dozens more. This past year they performed at the star-studded Oct. 4 Carnegie hall at "An Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends" show that Bono and U2 put on for their man Friday, also starring such luminaries as Laurie Anderson, Joel Grey, Bill Frisell, Scarlett Johannson, Lady Gaga, Courtney Love, Maria McKee, Shane MacGowan, Lou Reed, Friday's longtime collaborator Maurice Seezer, Martha Wainwright and Rufus Wainwright. The Turtles continue to perform, doing between 50 and 65 concerts each year.
Besides Mark 'Flo' Volman and Howard 'Eddie' Kaylan, The Turtles also comprises of Joe Stefko (Drums), Don Kisselback (Bass & Vocals) and Greg Hawkes (Keyboards).
Together Three Dog Night and The Turtles are truly pioneers of rock music and they are set to rock Australia in November 2010.
In-depth Biography
Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. While often criticized as commercial, the band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson ("One"), Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming"), Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me (Not to Come)"), Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World"), Argent's Russ Ballard ("Liar"), and Leo Sayer ("The Show Must Go On"). Wells and Hutton met in the '60s while the former was the lead singer of the Enemies and the latter, a writer/producer for Hanna Barbera Records who had recorded several singles, served as producer. In 1967, Hutton conceived the idea of a three-vocalist group, and he and Wells enlisted mutual friend Negron. They took their name from an Australian expression describing low nocturnal temperatures in the outback (the colder the night, the more dogs needed to keep warm while sleeping). The three cut a few unsuccessful singles and decided to expand their range by hiring backing musicians, who included guitarist Mike Allsup, keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon, bassist Joe Schermie, and drummer Floyd Sneed. "One" became the band's first Top Ten hit in 1969, while "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" hit number one a year later. "Joy to the World" became the group's biggest hit in 1971, spending six weeks on top of the pop charts, and their streak continued with their final number one, 1972's "Black and White" (a U.K. reggae hit for Greyhound), and their final Top Ten, 1974's "The Show Must Go On." By 1976, internal dissent arose in the group and Three Dog Night officially disbanded a year later. There was a reunion in the early '80s, and Hutton and Wells have since taken Three Dog Night out on the international touring circuit. In 2002 With The London Symphony was released and then, in 2004, to celebrate their 35th anniversary, The 35th Anniversary Hits Collection was released. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
