In just four years, Victorian Opera has established itself as a force to be reckoned with. One of the company's greatest achievements is an ability to inspire, engage and enthral audiences. The 2010 season ahead brings operatic treats for regular attendees as well as those who are new to the art-form. The 2010 season is the year of the woman. Every opera in the season deals with some aspect of the female of the species. The woman betrayed, the woman adored, the woman scorned, the woman as schemer, the woman as conqueror, the woman disconsolate, the woman as winner.
Victorian Opera's season begins in February with the exhilarating music of Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust at our annual concert at Hamer Hall. Also at the Arts Centre, is a double-bill of Walton's The Bear paired with Ibert's Angélique in the Playhouse, two farces with wild and extreme women at their heart! Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera is another exciting collaboration with Malthouse Theatre.
Prepare to shift to the edge of your seat with Britten's hauntingly atmospheric, The Turn of the Screw in July. Victorian Opera also look forward to introducing Steven Heathcote as the director of Handel's masterpiece Julius Caesar when they return to the magnificent acoustics of the Melbourne Recital Centre's Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, following the triumphant Xerxes this year.
There are also two world premier Victorian Youth Opera productions - The Parrot Factory and The Cockatoos adapted from a Patrick White short story, Sing Your Own Gilbert and Sullivan with the inimitable Richard Gill and the Discover Opera series.
