About Australian Chamber Orchestra

The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s 2014 season is as exciting and diverse as ever with classical masterworks rubbing shoulders with world premieres, surging through 42,000 years of musical evolution in one concert, hosting multi Grammy Award-winning Soprano Dawn Upshaw and Australian electronic music duo The Presets and collaborating with renowned actors from Bell Shakespeare.

Did you know that the lead guitarist from legendary band Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood, is also an award-winning classical composer? The ACO did, and they have commissioned a new work by the rock-star turned composer to be premiered in an otherwise all-Beethoven program featuring Beethoven Symphony No.1.

Also in the symphonic vein, Tognetti tackles the biggest symphonic configuration in ACO history for Mahler’s “Heavenly” Symphony No.4 and Sibelius’ Symphony No.6.

Smaller in scale but similarly emotionally expansive is a chamber music concert of Slavic melancholy and joy featuring one of the greatest pieces of chamber music in the canon, Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A. Joining ACO’s principal musicians for this concert is first-time collaborator, Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen.

Far from a first-time collaborator, international superstar soprano and long-time ACO friend Dawn Upshaw joins the ACO for the Australian premiere of Winter Morning Walks and sings works by Grieg and Rautavaara which are interspersed with spectacular string works including Grieg’s enduringly popular Holberg Suite.

In a celebration of the string sound, UK violinist Anthony Marwood takes the helm of the ACO, curating a program featuring the uplifting Dvořák Serenade for Strings. Marwood is loved by audiences, critics and players for his inspiring leadership, golden sound and distinctive playing.

Distinctive in his own right, fiery Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima is renowned for his passionate performance style and it is invigorating to experience him performing alongside Richard Tognetti in cello concertos by Boccherini and Haydn.

If all those classical masterworks and international guests weren’t enough, in 2014 the ACO flex their ever-adventurous muscles collaborating with Bell Shakespere for performances featuring actors on stage with ACO’s musicians to enact the stories behind the music, and Tognetti embarks on possibly his most ambitious project to date.

A kaleidescopic surge through 42,000 years of musical evolution, Timeline moves from ancient Aboriginal music up to the most recent Western music of today. Joining Tognetti for this epic journey are a cappella vocalists and lauded Australian electronic music duo The Presets.
