About

Songwriter and guitarist Chris Smither is truly an American original. On his release, LEAVE THE LIGHT ON, Smither draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and philosophers.
Chris Smither grew up in New Orleans where he first started playing music as a child. The son of a Tulane University professor, he was taught the rudiments of instrumentation by his uncle on his mother's ukulele. "Uncle Howard," Smither says, "showed me that if you knew three chords, you could play a lot of the songs you heard on the radio. And if you knew four chords, you could pretty much rule the world".
Over three decades ago, Smither - then in his mid twenties - headed to Boston where his talent flourished in the heyday of the Cambridge folk scene. It was there he honed his signature beat-driven guitar style, strongly influenced by the playing of Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin' Hopkins, and forged lifelong friendships with many musicians, including Bonnie Raitt (who recorded his songs, "Love Me Like A Man" and also "I Feel the Same"). In addition, Diana Krall, John Mayall, and Emmylou Harris are among the many who have also recorded Chris' songs.
Today, Smither continues to tour world-wide, performing 150+ concerts a year at clubs, concert halls, and festivals. Smither's songs have also been featured in independent films including Love From Ground Zero and Brother's Shadow. Smither also narrated a two-CD audio book recording of "Will Rogers' Greatest Hits" (Logofon Recordings).
Most recently, Smither was invited to contribute an essay to the forthcoming book, "Sixty Things To Do When You Turn Sixty," a collection of essays by American luminaries on reaching this milestone.
