About

D’Angelo

Received three Grammy nominations for 2016 including Best R&B Album for his latest release 'Black Messiah'

“An artist of uncompromising power and originality…”  Consequence of Sound

“Onstage, D’Angelo is a traditional funk-and-soul-revue taskmaster, wisely borrowing from the game plan followed by Prince and James Brown: assemble a varied band, keep it moving, and use only the best.” The New Yorker
D'Angelo is bringing his latest and universally acclaimed album, Black Messiah to Austrlaia & New Zealand for the first time. Michael D’Angelo Archer was born in Richmond, Virginia the son of a Pentecostal minister. He began teaching himself piano as a very young child, and at age 18, he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theater three weeks in a row. In 1991, he signed a publishing deal with EMI.

D’Angelo’s first major success came in 1994 as a writer/producer, helming the single ‘U Will Know’ on the Jason Lyric soundtrack; That helped lead to the success of his debut solo album, 1995’s Brown Sugar, which went on to sell over two million copies. With the title track ‘Lady’ the album continued to soar on the charts. Defining D’Angelo as one of the founding fathers and leading lights of the neo-soul movement of the mid-to-late ‘90s; along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Maxwell.

In early 2000, D’Angelo released his sophomore album, Voodoo which debuted at number one, an indication of just how large and devoted his fan base was. The lead single ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel)’ was a smash on the R&B charts and won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal; likewise, Voodoo won for Best R&B album.
After nearly a decade hiatus, D’Angelo returned in 2014 with his latest album Black Messiah, which debuted at number five in its first week of release on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim such as this;
“Black Messiah is a dictionary of soul, but D'Angelo is the rare classicist able to filter the attributes of the greats in the canon into a sound distinctly his own.” Pitchfork

“There have been musical comebacks as strong as “Black Messiah,” but not many. Like a New York City radiator, the record is warming and intermittently noisy, too intense to hold tightly but powerful enough to change an entire apartment’s atmosphere.”  The New Yorker

D’Angelo also performed at sold-out dates in Stockholm, Amsterdam and Paris and toured the US with Mary J Blige, and now his soulful artistry is returning to Australia & New Zealand for a series of very special performances next March.
