  • Not what I wanted

by BJS on 15/2/25Crown Theatre Perth - BurswoodRating: 3 out of 5

The first 10mins were excruciating! Overly loud, screaming guitars and bass completely overrode Judas. Couldn't make out the tune let alone the words. Things did improve but still difficult to hear words. Dancers were great! Staging was great! Actors/singers were great! Just unfortunate about the sound.

Totally spellbinding... the vocals were amazing...the music 🎶 the dances but mostly the outstanding voices were just brilliant.

  • Yes! Go and see it!

by J. Argyle on 14/2/25Crown Theatre Perth - BurswoodRating: 4 out of 5

I attended Jesus Christ Super Star on Thursday, February 13th at Crown Theatre in Perth. This is a musical with no dialogue other than the lyrics, which were, due to the deafening volume of the music, often difficult to understand. I feel I know the story fairly well (both the New Testament and this version) but a newcomer may well have been lost, wondering what on earth was happening. The first couple of numbers were immersively and palpably rock concert-like enough though, to enjoy without knowing what they were attempting to communicate and as the musical continued, there were enough times where the music stepped back to let the singers tell their story. The cluttered yet Tattooine-esque set was filled with what cleverly appeared to be hundreds of beige and grunge-clad Judean citizens who displayed a thrilling, imaginative choreography that was truly inspired but at times could have done with a little less frenetic activity as it became almost too exhausting to watch, causing me to switch off to it a little. A main theme of this story is the relationship between Jesus and Judas and this was meaningfully portrayed by Michael Paynter as a sweet and all too human yet charismatic Jesus, who constantly astounded with his almost inhuman vocal ability, and Javon King as a riveting Judas, one of the few great actors in the show. Unfortunately, Javon King had to be replaced by his understudy Graeme Isaako, who stepped up after the interval - I hope all is well with the talented Mr King. Mahalia Barnes’ Mary Magdalene had some diction issues, which need to be sorted out. In particular, she has a tendency to start the first word of many of her lines of lyrics with the letter H, where there should be none, for example ‘Hi don’t know how to love him’ and ‘Hevrything’s alright’. She has a soothing and loving presence, which makes her Mary very believable. I’m sorry to say I’d never heard of Reuben Kaye before but his rendition of Herod in all his glory was absolutely brilliant and worth the ticket price on its own. There is some splendid stage business involving sparkles and silver paint, which I won’t spoil by going into detail. I appreciated the final moments where Jesus and Judas seemed to meet up in the afterlife and forgive each other. That was my interpretation, at least. Well done everyone involved, you are amazing!

  • Hamilton

by Nic on 27/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Hamilton 3 days before it finished. I wish I'd gone months ago as I would love to have seen it again, it was that good. Without a doubt one of the best shows I've ever seen (if not the best). I had the standby Sean Sinclair as Hamilton and he was incredible. The whole cast was incredible, I could not fault anyone. I gave it 5 stars, but I would have given it more if I could have. Someone gave me good advice, he said read up on Alexander Hamilton before you see the show and that definitely was a great idea, as I could fully understand it all. Hope it comes back to Sydney again soon. Standing ovation from the whole audience. Don't miss it.

  • Jesus Christ Superstar

by Nic on 27/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

The performers were fantastic, especially Mahellia Barnes and the guy playing Jesus. The dancers were great, they all performed really well. The most annoying part was the volume of the music, it was ridiculously LOUD! From the moment it started all the way till the end. I almost left because it was getting to me so much. It spoilt the whole performance for me. I sat there with my fingers on my ears for the majority of the show. If it had been a normal level of loudness I would have enjoyed it so much more and would have given it a higher star rating. So, if you are going to see it, take earplugs. BTW, I saw Hamilton a week later and the music was a normal level, which was so much more pleasant.

  • Exceptional… Powerful… Moving

by Pedro on 24/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Saw the original back in the early 70's in the same theatre, this version, whilst different, was more impactful in my opinion. It started off a bit weird, but quickly progressed into something very special. The cast and the costumes were just awesome… varied roles and powerfully performed. And whoever picked the cast members for their roles did an exceptional job. So, all in all, I would go watch it again for sure. Really well done, congratulations!

  • Sensational Performances

by Tess on 24/1/25Rating: 5 out of 5

This version is brilliant, sensational, fantastic, spectacular, energetic, phenomenal, etc, etc. More than top marks. Wow! Go see it before it ends in Sydney!

  • Amazing

by Didi on 22/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Greta performances by all. Dancing was next level. Best performance I’ve seen of JCSS in the 3 I’ve seen

  • Beyond incredible. Talent was next level

by Netty Rosenthal on 20/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This has to be one of the most incredible versions of JC Superstar I have seen and we have seen many. The voices and talent were next level. Michael Paynter as Jesus has a voice and a presence that will leave you mesmerised - seriously I have never! He hits notes and holds them as if there is no need to breathe. You will be absolutely astounded. As for Javon King as Judas absolutely blows you away. He plays the part with such feeling and presense you would seriously believe you were listening to an apostle. The ensemble are all fantastic, their voices and movement were just fabulous to watch. Do yourself a favour and go. We took our children and their partners and all of us were stupified by this show. When it ends you want to sit a little longer before leaving the theatre. 5 out of 5 from me, I cannot recommend this show enough. It was sensational.
