  • Amazing spectacular of Rock and a theatre show

by Lynlee on 2/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I actually gave this show a standing applause and I see a lot of shows. Michael Paynter was phenomenal. His voice is out of this world great and I couldn’t believe how similar it was to John Farnham who is an icon. The crew were great, props amazing. I would see it again in a heartbeat. A big thumbs up!

  • Old school disappointed

    by OZ85rover on 2/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 1 out of 5

Attended a recent matinee of Jesus Christ Superstar and have to say I was very disappointed. Having seen the show many times and played in orchestras for many productions this present production would be my least favourite. The concept of characters playing guitar, microphone stands as a prop, saxophone solos on stage and unclear definition between characters was just too much.

  • A great experience

by Terrence on 2/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

A long time since I have seen a stage show and I now realise what I have been missing. The cast, music & the theatre were faultless. If you haven't experience theatre, then Superstar will show you what you've missed....

  • Seamless check in, great updated correspondence emails.

  • Fabulous production!

by TJ on 1/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

First musical I ever saw was the original Australia production in 1970s - and loved it - this production has been modernised and love it just as much! Fantastic- would love to see it again

  • JCS not as super as I thought!

by Joe on 1/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Great talent with some excellent vocals but it lacked in costume, stage design & setting. What on earth were they thinking when they produced the dance sequences!?? The ending could have been a bit better too!! Quite mediocre compared to other amateur stage versions and even the original that I saw three times, Sydney 2, Melbourne 1. I did however enjoy the music. But I guess that art acting is art acting and this interpretation in someone’s mind sadly did not grab me. My opinion…If you want to reminisce and listen to the great music…go!

  • Amazing

by Caz on 1/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Entire cast & musicians were Flawless. Would highly recommend

  • Disappointed

by Lindsay on 1/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 2 out of 5

An insensitive treatment of a powerful story Technology doesn’t compensate for lack of talent in performance or direction This was an exercise in shouting and screaming and bashing out a tune rather than telling a story in song and music It completely missed the emotional nuances that could have been All concerned could benefit by reviewing the performances of the 1970s

  • A disappointing performance

by Viana on 1/12/24Rating: 1 out of 5

**Review of the Musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”.** I recently attended a musical performance that left me with mixed feelings, primarily leaning towards disappointment. One of the standout elements was the choreography. The dancers displayed impressive coordination and energy, contributing positively to the overall visual experience. Additionally, the vocal performances of Juda and Mary were commendable; both showcased strong voices that captured attention. However, the music was excessively loud, making it nearly impossible to understand any of the lyrics. This overwhelming volume detracted from the storytelling aspect, leaving the audience unable to appreciate the intricate lyrics crafted by Tim Rice. Instead of a cohesive narrative, we were subjected to two hours of continuous, thunderous music and occasional off-key screaming. Acting was another area that fell flat. The performances lacked the necessary drama and depth to convey a compelling story. It felt more like a series of disjointed song performances rather than a cohesive spectacle. The main character's singing ability was questionable; while loud, the continuous screaming did not translate into quality singing. Furthermore, his appearance failed to resonate with the character of Jesus Christ, which was disheartening. Mary, while possessing a lovely voice, also struggled with her acting. The song “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” felt entirely out of place, arriving without any emotional buildup or context about her feelings leading up to that moment. Costume choices further detracted from the performance. The use of tracksuit pants and running shoes gave an impression of negligence, as if the cast had come straight from the gym instead of preparing for a theatrical production. This choice lacked contemporary relevance and did not suit the context of the performance. In summary, my overall experience was disappointing and somewhat disturbing. I contemplated leaving after the first act but decided to stay in hopes that it would improve, which it unfortunately did not. The performance felt akin to an amateur experimental showcase, resembling a collection of individuals randomly selected from a talent show rather than a polished musical theatre production. It was disheartening to witness such potential squandered, leaving me longing for a more professional and engaging experience.

by MM on 29/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Have lov d this show for over 50 years, and this adaptation didn’t disappoint! Every single performer was exceptional.

  • Enjoyed the show

by Marg on 28/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed this version, different from performances I’ve seen over the years. Would have been 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟if after the finale when the cast were all on stage and the audience clapping had subsided ,we were rewarded with an encore of Jesus Christ superstar.

  • Royal Box Extra

by Andus on 28/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Service to our seats was amazing. The Savoury packs were delicious and red wine exceptional. The show was incredible from our seats was like we were on the stage. Have seen every Sydney production of JCS this one was the best.

  • Sensash!

by Kaz on 28/11/24Rating: 4 out of 5

I saw the original with Marcia Hines and John English back in the day......so all the songs came flooding back. Reuben Kaye's version of Herrod was amazing. The choreography of this production is fabulous, and the voices of Jesus (Michael) and Judas (Javon) were spellbinding. A must go see.

  • I enjoyed it but not recommend

by DayTripper on 28/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

At beginning it was so loud! First thoughts were, “Will I be able to actually stay to see all of this?” But, stayed until the end. Some songs were so loud could not make out what the performers were singing. Some concepts were difficult to understand and some ott (Herod’s costume). I wouldn’t be prompted to see this production again but am glad that I did see it once.

  • Powerful voices

by DebG on 28/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

From the first song I was blown away by the singing. The singers playing Judas, JC and Mary were all amazing. Arrangements and Choreo have been updated for a new gen audience but even though I'm old enough to have listened to the original casts this revival is great.

  • FANTABULOUS!!!

by Gary on 28/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I have been around "Jesus Christ, Superstar"from the very beginning when I saw Jon English, Trevor White et al at the Capital theatre 50 or more years ago. It was BRILLIANT! I loved the movie with Karl Anderson and the Johnny Farnham, Jon Stevens and Angry Anderson revival. So as soon as I got an email about a new version of Superstar, as soon as I could get the money together (I am a pensioner) I purchased a ticket. The show was spectacular. It was sensational. It was absolutely fantastic. 25 hours later I am still buzzing! The music was great; the costumes, sets and lighting were first rate. Then there were the actors. I managed to meet a lot of them after the show at the stage door where they were gracious with autographs and photos. First mention must go to Sam Harmon playing Jesus for the very first time. A Star is Born with Sam. Then there was Javon King. What a Judas! I first saw him in "Hairspray' and was impressed. Yesterday I was absolutely astounded at how fantastic he was. Everyone was fabulous. Here's a few names I managed to meet and congratulate. Elliot, Mahalia, Stellar, Tana, Daniel Raso, Josh Spiniello, Graeme, Ethan and Josh Gates who seem to be everywhere playing so many characters. The blond hair helped with the identification. What else can I say. If I can get some money together I may well go and see it again.
