  • Wow

by Simone on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

We were in the front row in the centre so we saw everything - although I do think being a few rows back would have been better. The energy, the power, the dancing, the singing all just absolutely incredible. My husband who is not a dancer wanted to get up and dance they were just so incredible. So well done.

  • 70th birthday return to the Capitol

by Camo on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This was a 70th birthday present to my wife. She saw the show at the Capitol in 1972. It was a spectacular performance that just stunned us both. 52 years ago as a 17 year old, it was the most amazing thing she’d ever seen. Last night probably resets that description again.

  • Same But Different

by Libby on 15/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

I give the current production a thumbs up - have seen several productions starting in the early 70s. So good to see it back where it began in the Capitol Theatre. The staging, singing, choreography, costumes and music were fabulous. LOVED it and am going again. Did I mention the amazing singing - go Jesus! And Judas and Mary M and Pilate and Herod and......

  • Saw it at The Capitol in 1973.

by SandyB on 15/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

Saw it in 1973. Trevor White Jon English Marcia Hines. Very controversial then with the Catholic Church against it The 2024 presentation is contemporary whereas the original 72-73 was more traditional. Loved both productions. The score and lyrics will remain timeless.

  • One of the best

    by Amanda B on 15/11/24Rating: 5 out of 5

I have seen many iterations of Jesus Christ Superstar and this is by far the best one I've seen. The talent of Michael Paynter who played Jesus was second to none. With echos of a voice equal to John Farnham, I have never seen anyone hold THAT note for as long as he did. This kid is a star and I want to see him in everything now. I understand some audience members didn't like the costuming or set design, but this is just an interpretation and I think it sat well with the outcast feeling of Jesus' followers, (though I found the dancer who was the "mob leader"really distracting and felt it was a role that wasn't needed at all. My companion loved her, so each to their own.) The main cast overall were all incredible and of course Herod's song is always a guilty pleasure and this version did not disappoint. Go and see this musical NOW.

  • Breathtaking impeccable and outstanding

by Jane on 14/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

From booking our tickets online and paying them off through to picking up tickets and finally seeing the show, nothing could come close to the elation we experienced. My husband and I had never seen a live musical show and believe me, it was the best time we experienced. Drove down from the Hunter Valley and took advantage of staying, eating in the same Campbell St. Thankyou.

  • DISSAPOINTING

by CJL on 14/11/24Rating: 2 out of 5

Think interpretative dance mixed with Priscilla Queen Of the Desert - why the drag queen section is in the production is literally the strangest interpretation ever - saw the original with Jon English as a child and 2nd with John Farnham so was excited to see it again with my teens but neither could nor I even follow the storyline. Costumes of hoodies, trackie pants and sneakers and Caesar in all leather also doesn't set the era... Sorry but at $120 a ticket (family of 4) waste of money - even saw people leave prior to intermission and not return.

  • Jesus Christ Superstar Experience.

by Happy. on 14/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time. The theatre was beautiful, the show fantastic. Box office staff were very helpful, & purchasing the tickets very easy.

  • World Class Amazing Show

by Tracey B on 14/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This show was WOW on all levels! Flawless singing from all performers. Michael Paynter especially has a spectacular voice. Jacob King and Mahalia Barnes… superb! Very proud to see world class performances from Aussies! This is a must-see show with a profound message that stands the test of time. Well done to all involved!

  • Best musical I’ve seen in a long time.

by AG on 14/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Don’t miss out. Next level music, vocals and dance.

  • So disappointed

by Cathy on 12/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Had been so looking forward to seeing this again after loving a performance many years ago. Unfortunately the onstage musical accompaniment drowned out the singers in the first half and the lyrics were incomprehensible. Sound improved somewhat in the second half but still difficult to make out the words especially between Judas and Jesus. Good performances by Reuben Kaye and Mahalia Barns.

  • Great singing

by Ros on 12/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Would have liked to see period costumes. Confusion in the beginning by their casual today clothes. Ended quite abruptly . What about the hint of the resurrection?

  • A show that is full of energy and Rock Music.

by A very enjoyable experience. on 11/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

An interesting and enjoyable show presented by a cast that has high energy impact. Vocal clarity, projection and pronunciation could be better from some lead vocals, but this is a high impact strong production that leads to a night of very enjoyable theatre.

  • As Good as 1973?

by Mark B on 11/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I saw JC Superstar 1973 with Jon English, Trevor White and Marcia Hines as the main characters and it has remained a vivid memory for me all those 51 years! Was the 2024 version going to be as good? The short answer is a resounding yes! Michael Paynter as Jesus – an incredible voice. Javon King as Judas – my favourite. An amazing voice and professional performance. Mahalia Barnes as Mary – Mahalia performed so well. While some of the choreography had me confused (lots of hand waving and one part where the characters had one hand over an eye and the other arm reaching out), there were other sections that were outstanding. I'm not too sure what the girl with the reddy-coloured hair had to do with anything - running about like a mad person, or was she some sort of a court jester perhaps? Very odd. 🤔 I also missed a full orchestra, especially a string section, although the musicians did do a fantastic job. Would I see it again? Definitely! Would I recommend seeing it? Absolutely! Thank you for reviving this fine musical. My wife and I loved it. 🙌

  • A hit - not to be missed!

by Theatregoer on 11/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing. Not the first time I've seen Jesus Christ Superstar, live or film but this cast was all triple threats. Unforgettable! Real theatre is back. Thank you.

  • Everything is more than alright

by PPMKatie on 10/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I have only ever listened to the soundtrack of this, so I was going in with a completely clean slate. When it started, with the most basic and bland of costumes and set, I was nervous. It just meant that it all hinged on the vocals and music. And the vocals are mindblowingly awesome. Some of the notes that Michael and Javon hit, and sustained, were life changing. The music pulsed through me. I can’t wait to go again.

  • Best show EVER

by Kananutu on 10/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen many stage performances and musicals and that was hands down the best performance I have EVER seen. The singing was divine and the cast were of international standard and have done Australia proud. The voices of everyone from Jesus to Judas, Mary, Herod, Pilate and Caiaphis were beyond belief. And the dancing!! I have never heard singing like that in my life! Many times the voices had me in tears they were so beautiful and the lungs on Jesus and Judas! Wow!! . See this show!!!

  • Fantastic production

by JB on 10/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Loved this production, I wanted to sing the whole way through and couldn't keep still in my chair.

  • What did we just see?

by Michelle on 9/11/24Rating: 1 out of 5

Loved the band! From the first riff, you were hooked on music we knew so well. High energy performances from everyone that was appreciated, but it was disjointed and confusing. Totally agree with others. Second half was stronger.

  • Excellent Show

by Mark W on 9/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show with a fantastic cast. Great shoe all round.
