by Tat on 23/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

The show was fantastic, and the package I bought included champagne, chocolat and ice cream While the venue is beautiful inside the location is rather inconvenient, I would reconsider buying tickets for events there in the future

  • Amazing. The full musical experience

by Helen on 23/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Have seen quite a few versions of Jesus Christ Superstar from the Trevor White,John English in its original staging. The staging and music just get better. The notes reached sent shivers through me. Took my breath away

  • Bucket list. Tick!!

by SnoopyFan on 23/11/24Rating: 5 out of 5

I have loved the music since my cousin snuck the banned album into South Africa in the 70's. Never saw the show or the movie until now. Very high expectations. The first half left me feeling let down. The bass speaker in my right ear drowned out the voices and I was underwhelmed. Jesus belonged in a boy band. However!! The second half, the show takes off. They were obviously saving their voices. I forgot about the first half. Everything is incredible and they do absolute justice to the legendary show. I had an adrenalin rush and it was well worth flying down from Brisbane to see it so I can see it again when it comes up here. Not to be missed. This show is perhaps the most iconic Rock opera of all time.

  • Better than I imagined

by Liza on 22/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This was a fabulous show. Adrenaline pumping and riveting,

  • Good in parts, singers too loud

by Kay on 21/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

I have seen JCSS several times and I love it. The last time was the production at Entertainment Centre with Tim Minchin as Judas and a good-looking Jesus of Mediterranean appearance, all done in modern mode. It is one of my best theatrical experiences ever. This was done on a smaller stage with energetic and interesting dancing and great Caiphas and priests. The band was good. Herod was appropriately OTT. My main complaint is that Jesus and Judas were both screaming into their mikes and it was extremely hard to get the words. I know them all, so doesn't matter but my guests didn't and that was a problem. When they sang quiet songs, they had nice voices, so this was a pity on many counts. I noted that despite the hype from the reviews, the applause was OK but not rapturous.

  • JC Superstar

by Stepartie on 21/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Everything from purchasing tickets to watching show went like clockwork. Great day out.

  • Spectacular Superstar

by Robin on 19/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Spectacular because all the musical artists were excellent - the singers, the musicians & all the instruments with the beautiful Capitol theatre able to compliment their talents to the best. This is my 5th time of seeing another different performance (4th time at the Capitol theatre) - it always adapts to the current day - in costume & set design. Just loved the performance by all involved in Jesus Christ Superstar 2024. I'd see it again.... & again., 👏👏

  • Amazing Show Very Helpful Staff

by Hilton on 19/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

As I am reliant on a walking stick and mid-seventies, I am slow and awkward, the staff were extremely kind and helpful. Lack of foyer seating a problem but given the area size it was the best that you can expect. The show itself was top quality. as I have been to every performance since the seventies, I feel they did a great job with Suttle changes to not upset the modern generation. Overall I highly recommend seeing this production you will not be disappointed!

  • Wow Wow Wow

by HEY on 19/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely loved the performance. Voices were amazing. Standing ovation at end of show.

  • With the exception of Herod it was excellent.

by Pook on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

The tickets to see JC were a birthday gift. I have seen the show almost 50yrs ago so was extremely excited to revisit a beautiful memory. The 2024 modernised performance didn’t disappoint. However, the story isn’t a salacious comedy so Herods character wearing a ridiculous outfit was totally misaligned with the rest of the show.

  • UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE

    by N/A on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen the original stage show many times, also the movie and LOVED them both - HOWEVER! THIS VERSION IS ABSOLUTELY BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS. NO WONDER THE NEWSPAPER AWARDED IT 5 STARS - I WOULD GIVE IT 10 STARS.

  • Fabulous voices

by Jennicat on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Mahalia Barnes was a standout and the boys also had sensational voices Not as good as the original, a bit too modernized for me, but very enjoyable all the same

  • Wow! What a powerhouse performance ...

by Jo B on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! What a powerhouse performance of a classic rock opera. The stand outs were the two male leads, Michael Paynter as Jesus and Javon King as Judas whose vocal interpretations resonated with such emotion. The staging and the dance choreography was superb, a homage to the original dance routine by the leader of the dance, Darcey Eagle, being sublime and backed up by the unending energy of a fabulous ensemble cast. The musicians, who were not hidden away in an orchestra pit, but standing high up in the stage rafters, sounded sensational. Bravo and encore!

  • the show didn't hang together and was too loud

by deedee on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 1 out of 5

l really didn't enjoy this, Jesus character very unconvincing, not "jesus"charisma, too young! mary M character- no chemistry with jesus, miscast dancers vigorous dancing too intrusive and overwhelming to plot to the point of being annoying staging was dull Herod character ridiculously over the top and overplayed volume was deafening and then having to watch endless bloody crucifixion scenes Go watch Tim Minchin stadium show instead- it is SO much better

  • Extraordinarily good – an absolute must experience show

by Bobbie Sinclair on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I was totally immersed in this thrilling production of what can easily be regarded as Lord Lloyd-Webber’s best work. And despite being penned back in 1970, it has aged extremely well. The choreography was inventive and athletic; the direction sophisticated; supported by an amazing band whose performance – and what an incredible score for them to work with – was balanced, tight and demonstrative of the high calibre musicianship and technical brilliance of the players. From the most evocative moments to the quintessential rock numbers, as well as the visceral dischordant scoring that defines the climax of the show, there were many times where I was literally on the edge of my seat. Strong ensemble singing and stellar performances by Javon King as Judas; but especially Michael Paynter as Jesus whose mighty vocal range and control was flawless, bringing me close to tears; and Mahalia Barnes’ Mary, which was an excellent rendition for a newbie to the musical theatre stage. Reuben Kaye made the most of their flamboyant, flirtatious performance of Herod, milking the audience’s rapturous reaction. The set was inventive, incorporating clever moments of poignant lighting that elevated the storyline. Scrimp, save, beg, (but please don’t steal!) to secure yourself a seat to experience this dynamic new production of this icon of the musical pantheon. Well deserving recipient of an Oliver Award for Best Musical Revival.

  • A Modern Take on a Classic

by George on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

The music, singing and dancing was outstanding. I knew all the songs making the show incredibly enjoyable and I really appreciated the talent on the stage. It was my first time seeing Jesus Christ Superstar. As a child in the 1970s I remember listening to the soundtrack but never visualised the stage performance. Seeing the show on Saturday surprised me as Jesus was not presented as the traditional, rather, he had short hair and a tattoo. I was unprepared for the brutality of the story's end... bloody and emotionally draining. This is a show not to be missed. I will see it again.

  • Best musical ever!

by Mary on 18/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I love musicals and I watch almost all the musicals that come to Sydney. However this is the first time that I want to watch it again, right after seeing it! Everything about it was magnificant. The soloists were incredible. The ensemble was perfect. The solo instrumentalists were gripping and the orchestra just brought everything together. Well done to all those who performed on Friday 14th November! I am looking forward to hearing more of your singing!
