Know about this musical from when I was a kid, my parents saw it in the UK in the 1970s. This didn’t disappoint. Just as moving and musically imaginative as the original. Memories remembered and new ones made. Highly recommend, well worth it. This production slays 👌

  • An experience not to be missed

by Sue on 17/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Not sure where to start. The dancers were spectacular and the band was exceptional. The story line was very well portrayed, the ensemble supported the mains with their vocals, acting and dancing abilities. The lead actors played their parts exceedingly well, vocals were outstanding but Michael Paynter was sublime in both his vocals and portrayal of Jesus. Well worth going to see and tempting to go again. Sue Rigby.

  • Fantastic Modern interpretation of the 70s Superstar

by Mylestom on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

Great night and modern Version. Didn't understand why the Musical director and other where lighted on stage and did distract from performance

  • Great musical

by Ally on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Amazing musical! Powerful songs, voices & dancing. Jesus was fantastic. Mary Magdalene outstanding. Suggestions for improvement: For Judas, we couldn’t make out his lyrics in the lower note ranges. And King Herod’s vulgar one-liner and under-costume detracted from a super performance in this otherwise wonderful show.

  • Jesus Christ super star

by Rgee on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Firstly what a fantastic stage production and performance. 5 star to cast and crew. The sound was off in the first phase of the performance, very pitchy and lyrics were immensely hard to gather in. . And the use of microphones on stage was a little off putting. Especially when the stars of the show were sharing the mic’s.

  • Loved it just two little tweaks could improve.

by Jen on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

Love Jesus Christ superstar. Always have. Saw the original and the in the round one and a great production at the riverside parramatta. In this new production I was a little disappointed Jesus came out in a cap and had very short hair. He made up for it with his singing. It was amazing. He could hold those notes forever. Judus was amazing as well so talented and a great stage presence. Mary was a letdown for us. She couldn’t hit the notes very well and when she sang “ I don’t know how to love him” which is a sweet heartfelt song she wasn’t sweet at all. I know she is jimmy Barnes daughter but I think she is better suited to other styles of songs and there wasn’t a lot of chemistry between them. Apart from this little tweet it’s a great show. The dancing is fabulous. Music great. One of herods jokes fell flat but that depends on the audience. I will recommend it. I’d like to see it again with Mahalias stand in so I can compare.

  • Wow

by Simone on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

We were in the front row in the centre so we saw everything - although I do think being a few rows back would have been better. The energy, the power, the dancing, the singing all just absolutely incredible. My husband who is not a dancer wanted to get up and dance they were just so incredible. So well done.

  • 70th birthday return to the Capitol

by Camo on 16/11/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This was a 70th birthday present to my wife. She saw the show at the Capitol in 1972. It was a spectacular performance that just stunned us both. 52 years ago as a 17 year old, it was the most amazing thing she’d ever seen. Last night probably resets that description again.
