  • Beyond incredible. Talent was next level

by Netty Rosenthal on 20/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This has to be one of the most incredible versions of JC Superstar I have seen and we have seen many. The voices and talent were next level. Michael Paynter as Jesus has a voice and a presence that will leave you mesmerised - seriously I have never! He hits notes and holds them as if there is no need to breathe. You will be absolutely astounded. As for Javon King as Judas absolutely blows you away. He plays the part with such feeling and presense you would seriously believe you were listening to an apostle. The ensemble are all fantastic, their voices and movement were just fabulous to watch. Do yourself a favour and go. We took our children and their partners and all of us were stupified by this show. When it ends you want to sit a little longer before leaving the theatre. 5 out of 5 from me, I cannot recommend this show enough. It was sensational.

  • Beautiful voice!

by Lotus on 20/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Really enjoy Judas' singing. Personally speaking his performance is even better than Jesus in the show.

  • Awesome Show

by Odile on 20/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Wow!! From when they sang the 1st song to the end this show was captivating. All the singers voices were amazing and the dancers fantastic. I've waited over 40 years to see this production and it did not disappoint. The emotion that Michael Paynter brought to his singing was amazing. Mahalia Barnes ' voice was perfect for the part and beautiful. Javon King as Judas played it so well with a strong voice. The whole cast made it a superb performance. Loved it - worth the wait

  • Powerhouse of vocal talent!

    by Shelly.H on 17/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This production of Jesus Christ Superstar is phenomenal. The modern interpretation is on point. I was captivated from the first note on the electric guitar to the overture to the opening song to the finale. I loved the lighting, staging and the costumes. I loved seeing glimpses of the band in the props.

  • Brilliant and engaging show.

by Mooresy on 17/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

Amazing show and choreography. The lead vocals exceptional and boy can those guys hold a note. The dancers energy was brilliant. Thoroughly entertained.

  • Wonderful Service

by Deb on 17/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Due to the horrendous train disruptions on Wednesday, my group arrived way after the matinee curtain had risen. Ticketmaster box office staff very kindly re-allocated our seats to the evening performance and gave us seats even closer to the stage. We were very grateful for the thoughtful service. Our family Xmas present day out was extremely difficult but made a little easier by curteous staff.

  • Divine!

by Ant on 12/1/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Jesus Christ Superstar: Forgive them, for they know not what they do... Didactic? Undoubtedly. In this instance, I don’t mind that.  For Christ’s sake, this is good!  A most brilliantly crafted rendering of a modern classic. Were do I start? "30 AD", I suppose... just as the prologue begins once we are comfortable in our seats. As an experience, the Capitol Theatre, Sydney, is both charming and re-welcoming, even to the first-timer.  Packed houses noon and night speak for themselves.  Thank God this operascura has been raised again, this time to new heights. It’s umpteenth coming has been long awaited and here it is. As fabulous as when first performed, yet better still! As a third-time recidivist, I’m unable to decide between my first encounter and my last as to whom channels Jesus better.  Both portrayals were mesmeric. Judas is, thoughtfully, Judas. Mary Magdalene is a comfort vocally, visually and spirituality; balm indeed. The chorus company is remarkable, if not virtually seizing the limelight throughout.  How do they do it?  Answer: choreographic insanity, amply assisted by props literally dripping with metaphor and voices that resonate and resonate.  Beyond vigour, stylism, symbolism and blatant provocation, this troup célèbre combine youthfulness with an uncomfortable irksome message: clever-cunning-sad-human-reality. Pretty and ugly symaltaneously. I remain confounded by these Gnostics. Thank you, I guess? Worry not; everything's alright... Pilot: Pontius as ever. Herod: beguiling when not beheading. Leave now you extravagant tease! The musical ensemble itself is beyond believer. A veritable orchestra, yet only a handful of true musicians. The score's originality and integrity expertly maintained. Hosanna! Lighting, sound, costumes, make-up, all in such subtlety and extremism; I give in... crucify me now. Actually, I’m dying to see it again and again. Blasphemy? No! Unadulterated brilliance? Consult the Bible. Thank you to the creators and everyone involved. With Heaven on my mind, you did indeed “nail it”! Amen.

by Gigi on 7/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I had heard good & bad reviews of this interpretation of the show. The 3 of us who attended on Sunday were very happy with this latest version & the artistic choices made. Cast were all strong.
