  • What has happened to Musicals?

by Gaz on 7/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Beautiful music and lyrics, but spoilt by the excessive volume and screaming of some of the singers. This is the second musical I've attended in the last 2 months, and both have been spoilt for similar reasons. What are directors thinking? Musicals should be about entertaining songs and music, not screaming singers and deafening, distorted beats! Regretably this will be my last musical for a while. My daughter, who is almost 40 years younger than me, agreed with this view.

Great Show Great Seats, Friendly and Helpful Staff at Venue

by Manda on 7/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 2 out of 5

Sadly, I didn’t enjoy this rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar. Every song was yelled and screamed, and the band was too loud to be able to hear the words clearly. The songs are amazing for this musical, but unfortunately the production wasn’t.

  • Sensational!

by FGA on 6/1/25Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This is the second time we have seen this production in 6 weeks and we could go back to see it again tomorrow. Every cast member performs sensationally however Jesus, Judas and Mary are exceptional. The choreography is great too. It would definitely appeal to the younger age groups. This is a show not to be missed.

  • Great Production - different styling

by Di on 28/12/24Rating: 4 out of 5

Loved the leads and the support singers. Jesus could hold a note longer than anyone else I've ever heard on stage. Jesus, Judas and Mary were wonderful, Herod was camp and funny and a huge contrast to the horrors around Jesus at the trial. Thought the music was great but did overshadow the lyrics a lot by being a bit too loud and you do need to hear the lyrics to make it work. Thought the costumes a little disappointing - and although I didn't get too excited about the set in the first half and the whole thing dragged a bit for the first half, it came into its own in the second. Saw it in the 70s with Trevor White, Jon English, Frank Thring and Marcia Hines and although this was a very different cast, it was not at all disappointing and I thought the second half was brilliant. I'd see it again and my two 14 year old granddaughters loved it once we got to the second half. Bravo everyone involved. And the Capitol is such a gorgeous venue = small queues at the bar and reasonable prices.

  • Superduper!

Loved the whole show, the band was on point, the choreography was perfect for the space and the performances were great. I surely recommend this to anyone.

  • Missed opportunity

    by Nikki G on 19/12/24Rating: 2 out of 5

I saw this in Sydney last month and it really frustrated me. To be fair, I’m a music theatre fan, I’ve seen this show many times (including the wonderful Farnham concert version all those years ago) and it’s one of my absolute favourites. It was sensational vocally. Judas and Jesus in particular had truly phenomenal voices. Mary’s voice was nice but the lack of chemistry with Jesus was a shame. But this production was a jarring hybrid of a concert version and staged production. There was no ability to get lost in the setting of the story. The voiceover at the start says ‘there were no mobile phones in Judea’ but there were hand held mics and mic stands (to say nothing of the school productionish sharing of mics)?! These meant the characters were often singing to us instead of each other, which neutered the intensity of some of the exchanges. Lack of props/ costuming made it hard for newbies to follow what was going on, eg. the lepers weren’t made up as lepers; the market scene had no market staging, etc… Where there were costumes, the choice of costumes made no sense and added nothing to the visual story. The direction and choreography were a baffling mess. The dancing was very repetitive and ‘scarecrow/ MJ Thriller esque’ which was inappropriate at best and distracting at worst. (One dancer with pink hair was doing some sort of demented marionette routine during the Judas suicide scene 👀). There wasn’t really any attempt to convey the complex conflicts and relationships, to tell the story itself; which really limited my emotional engagement. It started big and continued with relentless speed until the end. No light and shade; no restraint. Ps. Probably the most profoundly disappointing thing was the absence of the resurrection moment at the end. That changes the entire point of the show and doesn’t resolve the question the title asks. So for me ultimately, brilliant voices let down by a failure to actually tell the story, rather than just sing the score.

  • Unbelievable

by Mum of many on 17/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Thankyou so much for a fantastic experience. My sister and I had a great time and everyone was so helpful which made the whole day special and no stress. The cast of Jesus Christ Superstar did an amazing show and we both enjoyed it. Well done to King Herod you really did “Nail It”

  • Brilliant production!!

by Andy on 17/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

I've been very fortunate (plus I'm old....) to have attended at least one show from each of the major Australian productions of Jesus Christ Superstar - the first in 1972 - & this latest outing easily stands with the best of them. It's a throwback to the original shows; with stripped-back staging & vocal styles reminiscent of how it was originally scored in the '70s. The voices of every single performer on stage were amazing, particularly those of the leads. And the choreography....how they perform seamlessly for 8 shows per week is astounding. I hope this production does well, every fan of musical theatre should see it, & hopefully, everyone involved goes on to long, successful careers. It was such a brilliant performance, I loved every second of it.

  • Enjoyable

by Cal on 16/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

Electronic music was incredibly loud and drowned out the lyrics of the songs sung by Judas and Jesus. Most disappointing!

  • The Capitol staff were very friendly and welcoming

by Fabulous on 16/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

The show was fabulous and very contemporary, different from others I have seen before but a nice change. Music, singing and acting was very good and pleasant

  • Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the best.

by Christine on 14/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

Go and see it you won’t be disappointed. Fantastic show and the singing and dancing is amazing.

  • Disappointed!

by Ian A on 13/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 2 out of 5

I came with high expectations knowing the Gospel story and Jesus' last days. My wife and I found the lyrics hard to understand and Jesus was too placid and passive when my sense he was very intentional in how he lived. Caiaphas and his crew were a little too comical and Herod was just too camp and disingenuous to the role of a King. I enjoyed Mahalia and her vocals were a highlight for me. I did get sad when Jesus was on the cross and thought this scene was done well. I found it strange that Judas re-appeared after committing suicide and I didn't know what to make of the final scene, John 19:41, in the 'tomb'. Michael Paynter and Javon King have great voices, perhaps a little less screaming would have been better. The ensembles voices and dancing were good but much of the latter didn't make a lot of sense to the storyline. Oh well, it's rare for us to not enjoy a show but there's always going to be one!

  • Jesus Christ Superstar

by RossC on 12/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 4 out of 5

It is a totally different feel than the original production, much more contemporary. However, it was a great show and the cast were tremendous especially Judas. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good night at the theatre. The Capital staff where also very helpful and made it easy to enjoy the event.

  • Disappointed

by ZW on 12/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

Performers and orchestra fantastic however for most of the show the music seemed to drown out the singing and you couldn’t make out the words. Second half was a bit better. Glad I knew the storyline and lyrics as I think it would have been hard for someone to follow if they didn’t know the plot.

  • Enjoyable but could be improved

by LeeB on 9/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 3 out of 5

The singers and dancers were amazing. Orchestra excellent too. Volume on lead singers, particularly second half, was ear piercing. Too loud and boarded on screeching. Costuming was a bit naff. Stage props and stage production disappointing.

  • Absolutely amazing experience

by JK on 9/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 5 out of 5

This musical was absolutely amazing. Michael Paynter as Jesus took my breath away!!!

  • Very disappointing

by Sian on 9/12/24Capitol Theatre, Sydney - HaymarketRating: 2 out of 5

What a let down! While the cast all had great voices, they pronounced only about half the lyrics clearly. It was very hard to follow even though I knew the music and had seen this production in the 90s. The dancing was weird and strangely disturbing (not in a good way). And did anyone else realise the cross was inverted? I am not religious but came out feeling a great sense of wrongness.
