Puccini's romantic masterpiece, the most popular opera in the world, is given a brand new star studded production by Melbourne Opera. Featuring many of opera's most beloved arias and ensembles, this new production will transport you to the heart of 19th century Paris following the loves and losses of a group of young Bohemians.
Elena Xanthoudakis, fresh from her triumph in MO's recent Lucia, makes her debut as the tragic seamstress Mimi. Popular international soprano Helena Dix returns to make her debut as the feisty Musetta, with Boyd Owen as the romantic poet Rodolfo and Chris Tonkin as the charismatic artist Marcello. With a special guest appearance by John Bolton-Wood, this outstanding cast is rounded out with Darcy Carroll, Stephen Smith and Asher Reichman. The new production is directed by the award winning Gary Abrahams, and Raymond Lawrence leads the Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

I loved the production of La Boheme. The performance was uplifting and inspiring. The standard of singing was excellent and it was a most memorable performance.
Such a terrible disappointment, my wife and I left as soon as physically possible. It’s a shame such a wonderful piece was interpreted this way. Music volume overwhelmed the voices, the musicians couldn’t even fit in the orchestra section and acoustics were to cry about. Even with our earplugs the tone of the sopranos was ear piercing. Will never attend opera at the Athenaeum again.
I dislike that the only option for tickets is by accessing the Ticketmaster app via mobile. I would prefer to print my tickets.
Melbourne Opera's "La Boheme"was a wonderful experience. While the Atheneum is a small venue, and the stage also small, it does present some challenges, but it is also a wonderful intimate Opera experience. The performances, the orchestra, the sets were all fantastic. Again Melbourne Opera has provided an accessible and quality Opera experience. Many thanks.
The show was excellent, the orchestra marvellous. Reminders about the show from Ticketmaster were well timed. The staff at the door checking in were pleasant and efficient. Inside the theatre was a little cool, but the weather outside was cold also. The queues to the toilets were their usual frustrating experience - but not much can be done about this in older theatres, unfortunately.
