Roll up! Roll up! Rock 'n' roll ringmaster SERJ TANKIAN has donned his top hat and will be cracking the whip at some very special shows in Australia. With System of a Down on hiatus, the frontman has gone solo with the multi-layered album Elect the Dead and his band the FCC.
Since the album's release in late 2007, the freshly minted solo artist has supported Foo Fighters, played festivals including Rock en Seine, Ozzfest, Coachella, Reading and Leeds, and along the way has been known to pull everything from ABBA to Dead Kennedys covers out from under his stylish top hat. TANKIAN calls his live show with band the FCC "part comedic and part heart-attack serious". It's vaudeville, it's soapbox, it's pomp, it's theatrical, it's political, and most of all, it's utterly unique.
And who better to introduce as Special Guests than the heavily conceptual Fantomas, a supergroup made up of vocalist Mike Patton (Faith No More), Buzz Osborne (The Melvins), bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) and drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer), whose music though rooted in heavy metal, touches on many different musical genres, and is laced with a crazily offbeat sense of humor.

It seems Mike Patton has a way with music. His refusal to stop putting out high quality gems under a different moniker on a regular basis is astounding. Fantômas are the   vehicle that drives his sonic vision into a schizophrenic fully charged supergroup rounded out by Buzz Osborne on guitar (Melvins), Trevor Dunn on bass (Mr. Bungle, Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant) and Dale Crover on drums (Melvins).
Fantômas will be performing their most acclaimed album The Director's Cut live in its entirety at the Big Day Out and when supporting their buddy, System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian at his Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne solo shows.
The Director's Cut is composed of covers of various scores from 1950s through 1990s film noir and horror/cult motion picture soundtracks, as interpreted by Fantômas. As cinematic as its source material The Director's Cut has been described as the most innovative and interesting, not to mention listenable of contemporary death metal synchronised with pure rock operatics.
Fantômas have used a genius approach of marrying different aesthetics to create pulsating, weird and wonderful arrangements that are dangerously intelligent and highly entertaining.
