About
In September, The Australian Ballet will return to the Palais Theatre for a special season of the comedic family favourite fairytale, Coppélia. The Palais Theatre holds a special place in the company’s history. They first performed on the Palais Theatre stage in 1964 and have since performed 10 world premieres there including their original premiere of George Ogilvie’s Coppélia in 1979.
Set to Leo Delibes’ cheery score, meet the lovers Swanilda and Franz and their neighbour Dr Coppelius, an eccentric toy maker who dreams of bringing his mechanical toys to life. Dr Coppelius has a daughter who is not what she seems and Swanilda must rescue Franz from the magician’s sinister doll-filled lair – with the help of some fancy footwork!
Sorcery and masquerade, romance and high jinks – this is the funniest, sunniest ballet you’ll see all year.
"Kristian Fredrikson's costumes and sets are sumptuous, the dancing is neat and engaging, and children in particular will enjoy the story.” - SUNDAY HERALD SUN
POST SHOW Q&A - Saturday 26 September (Free with your performance ticket)
Stay behind after the show for a special Q&A with Artistic Director David McAllister and our panel of artistic staff and dancers. Ask the experts about the dancers’ preparation, the costumes and sets, the music and the choreography.

This special one-hour version of Coppélia is performed live on stage and narrated by one of the central characters. Suitable for children aged 4 and above, it’s the perfect school holiday activity.
