About

The biggest noisemakers of the past year, Manchester duo THE TING TINGS are here to put the spunk in the summer and the buzz in BIG DAY OUT. Not to mention the drums, the drums, the drums, the drums!
THE TING TINGS are Jules de Martino and Katie White. They met when Katie was just out of being a Wigan schoolgirl and bonded over a shared ambition to rock the foundations of pop music. Fast forward a few years, and that's just what they did when they scored a knockout with a one-two punch of alt-pop perfection in the shape of singles Great DJ ("The year's first lo-fi dancefloor smash" said NME) and That's Not My Name (a UK No.1, no less).
Next came an instant UK No.1 album in We Started Nothing. "A delirious joy-gasm," was the BBC's response. "Unremittingly adorable."
While THE TING TINGS are barely two years old, Jules and Katie's story goes way back, encompassing several false starts, dead end bands (RIP, Dear Eskiimo) and plenty of opportunities to give up. No chance - White picked up a guitar for the first time, de Martino was newly inspired, and riding on raw adrenalin, the music of THE TING TINGS was born. Think snappy choruses, angular guitar work, whipsmart drumming, live loops and plenty of f-u-n fun. "It's kind of like a happy accident," de Martino told the BBC, "and it's going to continue like that."
The duo's live show, however, is no accident - honed at career-starting house parties and now getting used to life on festival stages around the world. It's a show best described by NME as "short, sharp and perfectly formed".
"One of the best things about this band is witnessing how much they're clearly enjoying themselves making all this noise - Katie grinning broadly at Jules as she thrashes out her bare chords. Their kickass way with a simple pop tune doesn't hurt, either, but uncomplicated as the music is, there's no doubt, watching them, how much they mean it." (NME, April 2008)
We Started Nothing... Not likely. THE TING TINGS have definitely started something. But what, exactly? Find the answer at BIG DAY OUT 2009.
