About

Mobile Industries and Troy Horse are proud to announce the double bill tour of two of the USA's songwriting legends Kinky Friedman and Van Dyke Parks who will be performing together on stage for the first time in Australia.

Parks' career started in the 60's, famously collaborating with Brian Wilson on the classic "lost" Beach Boys album Smile. In the decades since, his arranging and writing  CV includes names like Bruce Springsteen, U2, Cher, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Sheryl Crow, Joanna Newsom and of course, Kinky Friedman. Van Dyke has also played on albums by The Grateful Dead, The Byrds and Keith Moon with his own Song Cycle album from  1968 now considered an American masterpiece.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Van Dyke has also dabbled in acting and producing; he has authored several books and written scores for theatre, television and film.

Like so many cool people in the boom generation, Kinky Friedman first saw the world through the Peace Corps in the sixties.  Kinky did his PC time in Borneo, wherein he introduced the Frisbee to the natives and taught farming techniques to people who had been farming successfully for thousands of years.  But it was in Borneo that Kinky began to write the tunes that would propel the rest of his life.

Friedman released his first album in 1973. Sold American, with his band the Texas Jewboys, contained what has become his signature song They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore and the rest of that decade saw him tour with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and play residencies in NYC where regular guests included John Belushi and Robin Williams amongst others.

Kinky's career has now expanded to include over 30 novels, a campaign to become governor of Texas (he came 3rd), a cigar and coffee empire and 2011 will also see an album of Kinky covers released by his old pal Willie Nelson.
