About

Known for hits like 'This Is the Day’ and 'Uncertain Smile’, Australian fans can expect to hear the favourites they know and love as well as some newer material. Born from the same scene that brought us Nick Cave and The Cure, THE THE went on to achieve critical acclaim and commercial success around the globe. Their infectious sound spans a multitude of genres and topics, musing melodic synth pop with potent socio-political alt rock.

They broke through to the mainstream with 80’s albums Soul Mining, Infected and Mind Bomb, capturing audiences with their kaleidoscopic sound and fearless commentary on modern Britain.

Frontman Matt Johnson was raised in the world of London nightlife and live music, forming his first band at 11 and scoring his first music industry job at 15. With his creative passions unable to be contained by one thing, Johnson is also a film soundtrack composer, publisher, broadcaster and political activist.

Johnson resurrected THE THE in 2018 for tours of the UK, Europe and the US, culminating in The Comeback Special live album and film. With tickets selling out within minutes of going on sale, it’s clear to see the fans have never left.

THE THE’s unwavering passion for urgent truth and freedom of expression has carried them through countless shifting landscapes. With decades of headline tours and massive festival spots under their belt, don’t miss your chance to witness post-punk royalty perform in Australia and NZ.

    Amazing

by Robbo on 24/11/24The Fortitude Music Hall - Brisbane

Absolutely first class. Brilliant musicians and sound as good if not better than 25 years ago. Try gentleman and thanks for the chat this morning at breakfast. Have a safe trip home and hope you consider touring again.

    Awesome

by Chris on 24/11/24The Fortitude Music Hall - Brisbane

Last saw The The 39 years ago in Brisbane - Matt’s voice is just as incredible now as it was then. The deep lyrics and the commentary on the human condition were amazing. Having an initial Lisening Set - to play the entire new album was fantastic decision - allowed the audience who had no yet heard the album to discover something new (and it was fantastic) - for those who had already heard it to hear the band perform it live - while the later Dance Set - allowed those who wanted the nostalgia of the bands earlier hits to see those live and dance to them. Great approach given the huge body of work they have to draw on. The band members were also excellent - the amazing piano solo on Uncertain Smile - and drum solo on Giant - plus some of the incredible guitar and harmonica work across the night - including playing the guitar like a violin - really showcased their collective skills. Very talented group of musicians. If you have time tonight and have not yet gone to see them - highly recommend going and more than a little tempted to go again myself.

    The gig of a lifetime

by AmT on 19/11/24Hindley St Music Hall - Adelaide

I've loved The The since 1984 and followed Matt's emotional/lyrical and musical journey ever since, across the decades as we've both grown up. What an absolute privilege it was to see Matt in my hometown, long after I'd given up hope of ever seeing him live (due to never being in the right place at the right time before now). He and the band did not disappoint! It was a very long set, so appreciated after Matt's decades-long absence, while he recovered his mojo and inspiration for his own unique brand of pop music again. What a contribution to humanity he has made! This tour devoted an entire set to the deeply rewarding new LP, plus shared selected highlights from his incredible back catalogue. Musicianship was outstanding, sound quality in this venue was excellent and seeing the band live fulfilled every expectation. It's not often we can say that a highly anticipated experience lives up to our hopes. Thank you Matt and band! Ensoulment is amongst your best work ever! 💗

    Fabulous show

by BlueBel on 19/11/24Hindley St Music Hall - Adelaide

Actually bought tickets as a birthday present for hubby as The The are his favourite band, but then work got in his way so i went with a mutual friend. Despite only knowing about half of the songs, I thought the band were awesome, putting on a wonderful show. Last time I saw them play was 30+ years ago, but the guys still have the enthusiasm, talent and skills to keep us dancing and singing! First time at the venue too, was pleasantly surprised and all the staff were helpful and friendly

    A really enjoyable night but...

by Woodayau on 19/11/24Hindley St Music Hall - Adelaide

Overall a great night, what I expected and got. My only issue is with the venue which needs to wash the floor. It is so sticky that it nearly pulled my shoes off.

Great band ruined by appalling sound

by Neils on 18/11/24Palais Theatre - St Kilda

The band played well but unfortunately due to sound quality most of the vocals were lost. In the first set, Matt spoke the lyrics with his deep voice unlike in the second set where he sang in a higher register. There was some kind of bass resonance from the deep vocal and the bass guitar which just boomed where we sat around B52 upstairs. This was almost the same but not quite as bad as a recent gig by The Cruel Sea at the same venue where we sat downstairs under the balcony and were bombarded by a bass boom which drowned out vocals and all the other instruments (improved a bit around half time when the bass was adjusted). I'm sick of paying like $150 to see a favourite band at a big name venue like the Palais and having such a disappointing experience. I will not go and see another band there, ever.

    It’s start at 8.30

by Jools on 18/11/24Palais Theatre - St Kilda

What’s with the lateness of the crowd. It said 8.30 start. Are they busy filling up with grog? Must be very distracting for the artist. Lines of people looking for their seats in the middle of the row. I found that at TOM YORK 2 weeks ago. Heaps of people getting up to buy alcohol in the middle of the set, all chatting as they left to fetch drinks. Very disrespectful for others and the artist.
